Xhale, a contemporary
jazz company, is based in the heart of Philadelphia, Pa. The director, Michael Susten (a Philadelphia native), pulls dancers
and choreographers from all over the city to create its ensemble. The Xhale dancers, range from dancers of all ages, technical
backgrounds and body sizes. The company is known for its contemporary style, but adds musical theater, tap and live vocalists
to its shows; making it enjoyable for audiences of all ages. This is the company's second year performing as "Xhale",
but the dancers have been performing together as students for years. While on stage, the audience not only witnesses strong
technical dancers, they also see the relationships between them, adding a more vulnerable experience to the show. Justine
Capria (Artistic Director) and Michael, work together to bring real life stories to the stage, an emotional but rewarding
experience. The two met their freshman year at the University of the Arts, and have been wanting to create movements together
ever since. The company's full name, "Xhale- A World full of Seduction, Passion & Vulnerability" describes
exactly what it is. Over the past year, Xhale has had two sold out concerts at the Painted Bride
Art Center. Its debut performance in May and then its performance during the Philadelphia Fringe Festival in September. The
Xhale Dancers have spent time giving back to the community, by teaching dance classes and performing for local high school
students, as well as volunterring at charity events and benefits, such as The Philadelphia Marathon, USArtists and the D for
Degas Special Event, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Xhale's mission is to spread the word that not all dancers
have to fit a certain stereotype. Its unique and entertaing shows are what keeps the audience comming back and wanting
more.
